I think the lighting in this image was successful because the darkness contributes to the overall feeling of misery and or mystery. By having one side of her face completely blacked out, the photographer was able to add more meaning to the image. The dark background combined with the dark hair adds to this photo. Also, making the image black and white contributed to its success. If it had a lighter tone to it, the meaning behind it would be more difficult to grasp.
The lighting in this image was successful because the lighting on the man is greater than that of the chair or the background. Adding emphasis on the man in the photo through the lighting was beneficial because it made his emotion stand out more. Also, the color choice was well thought out because black, grey, and maroon are all colors of focus and intelligence, in my opinion, and this man portrays those concepts.
