I believe the spotlight lighting was quite successful due to the way the figures are framed in the center. The dark edges and the two figures seeming to protrude from the central figure add a feeling of anchor and gravity. The hands that come to the bottom of the frame where the photo is completely black seem to complete the light space the spotlight creates.
I believe the even lighting across the figure adds a really nice feeling that the image is blended. The shadow caused by the head creates relief in nearly all of the same tones throughout the picture, invoking variety. The fact that the image is also in black and white is another facet of the blended appeal.
