I believe that the lighting in this photo is successful because it is able to capture all of the important details in the mans face, yet not drawing your eye directly to the background.
Right Photo
I believe the lighting in this photo is successful because it draws the viewers eye directly to the beard which is what the photo revolves around, as oppose to dark lighting where the beard would just be colorful without details.
