light

Butterfly lighting is the classic beauty lighting technique. Great for high cheek bones and named for the butterfly pattern shadow that forms below the nose when it’s used, this will yield gorgeous “glamour” shots.  This photo by William Sawalich depicts the butterfly lighting extremely well. I enjoy this type of lighting because it is most used in close-up shots involving fashion.
Split lighting is moving the light over to one side, you’ll cast half of your subject’s face in shadow of varying intensity. This can range from complete darkness, to something much more subtle. This image is great at using the split lighting technique. It expresses great amounts of emotion by only showing one side of her face.
