Lighting Portraits- Carter Stankard

Carter Stankard

I like this portrait's lighting because it is evenly lit on both sides. This helps the image feels asymmetric allowing the detail of the face not be the main focus of the photo.

This portrait is well lit because the black background allows the details of the face to easily be seen. This really helps the overall tone of the composition.

lighting

The technique of lighting is called backlight. As the name clearly explains, the light is near the back of the model and shines where only part of the model can be seen. This lighting style really brings out the details like her hair and the smoke of the cigarette. I find this technique really mysterious and intriguing.
In this picture the artist used rim lighting. This technique outlines the model, in this case a cat, to show the figure of the model. This technique enhances the viewers perception.

Portrait Lighting

The first picture uses loop lighting which creates a shadow on the left of the model's nose, face and neck.

The second picture uses butterfly lighting creating shadows under the model's nose and defines the model's cheek bones

This photo is taken by Annie Leibovitz, a photographer born in Connecticut. This photo captures the color blue in her eyes. I feel like this image shows the beauty in her. She looks all dirty and lonely but then you see her bright eyes. Your eyes go directly to hers. Unlike her photos, my photos will be more bright and saturated.

Lighting Techniques

The lighting technique used in this photo is called Rembrandt lighting, and I think it makes the woman in the photo seem to have more than one aspect to her, as one side is darker and one is lighter.

The lighting technique used in this photo is broad lighting, and it makes the woman's face seem as if she were coming out of the shadows and is skeptical of her new environment.

I think the lighting on this photo is good because everything is dark except some parts of her face , when you look at her your eyes go right to those parts.

This photo's lighting I like because she is almost glowing because of the light on her, the light highlights parts of her face and makes them stand out.

Lighting

I enjoy the lighting and the background, because they made a really good photo out of an ordinary place, it does not seem like a studio based photo. And the light brings the attention to the guy.

I also like the lighting in this photo because the lighting is focused on his face, making in the focal point of the photo.

Studio lighting Laskey

I enjoy this photo because the lighting is on the right side
of this man's face which creates the left side of the photo
to be completely black. The textures the water droplets
on the man's face is really appealing to me. Also the lighting
coming in from the right side makes his face look very
bright and bold.

This photo has the light coming in from behind the figure.
Which adds a sort of silhouette look to her face and top
of her chest. The sharpness of her collarbones and face
turned sideways gives a very natural look to the image.
However also looks as if the figure is coming off the
dark background.

lighting

This lighting is dark giving of a more of an emotional tone to the image, in this case that is depressed.

This images lighting is brighter, it gives of a beautiful tone one of curiosity.

Portrait Lighting

For the picture on the left the lighting is a centered lighting in the middle of his face, and I like how the lighting draws emphasis on the persons face and isolates his expression. For the picture of the right, the lighting is a type of lighting called butterfly lighting. I like how the light is evenly distributed across her face and there are no dark spots. I also like how the light really reflects off of her eyes in a circular shape.

Lighting Ward Jarvis

Left Photo
I believe that the lighting in this photo is successful because it is able to capture all of the important details in the mans face, yet not drawing your eye directly to the background.

Right Photo
I believe the lighting in this photo is successful because it draws the viewers eye directly to the beard which is what the photo revolves around, as oppose to dark lighting where the beard would just be colorful without details.

portrait lighting

I like this photo because of how the light is on the left side of her. So it allows the one side of her face to be much brighter then the other and create a nice shadow forming around her face. I also like how its interesting that the lighting goes form light to dark around her face creating a sense of completion around her face.

I like this photo because the lighting is showing only who people see him to be, and maybe not who he is. And how the lighting also highlights the scars on his face, showing his past through his physical appearance, showing us that even though he is young, he can go through hard times just like adults can. I also like how he's coming out of the shadows, and not his past and leaving his dark past behind him.

light light light light

I believe the spotlight lighting was quite successful due to the way the figures are framed in the center. The dark edges and the two figures seeming to protrude from the central figure add a feeling of anchor and gravity. The hands that come to the bottom of the frame where the photo is completely black seem to complete the light space the spotlight creates.

I believe the even lighting across the figure adds a really nice feeling that the image is blended. The shadow caused by the head creates relief in nearly all of the same tones throughout the picture, invoking variety. The fact that the image is also in black and white is another facet of the blended appeal.

really fun portraits!!!!!

The lighting in this image shows warmth yet also gives the character edge, the way the blue light shadows over her pale skin gives off a mysterious and somewhat advanced look, the rims of her hair are lightly dusted with the blue color which shows a somewhat shy, cut off look.
I really enjoy the lighting in this image due to the fact that it brings life to the model, the smoke effect  shows power and handwork, the way that the smoke seems to be moving up shows the struggle to rise to the top of whatever her activity is.
Image result for perfect lighting for studio portraits
For this photo the lighting his beautiful the way the light almost just bounces off her body in a shiny elegant fashion . The way the light goes to her hair and it shines and glistens in a way . the also black neutral background emphasizes her.

This photo works perfectly with black and white for her and the image. I love the way she blends with the back ground , as her hair fades in almost like a horizon line . her arms stands out from the back ground .

Portrait Lighting

This photo is more of a brighter lighting style and this is the type of lighting I will be using for my portrait project.

This image is more of a darker style of lighting. The fact that it is in black and white does not make it
dark. It makes it dark because there is no natural light coming in to make it bright.

Creepy Lighting

This lighting is good because it stays consistent with the background making her clothes seem to disappear. This creates a creepy supernatural feeling.

portrait lighting

The lighting on this photo is more on the figure itself, and her expression on her face is very bland. Also, with the desaturation it helps the image look very sad or upsetting.

The lighting in this image blends more with the figure, so there is not as much importance between the figure and the background. Also, the baby's face is very bright and happy making the lighting and saturation of the photo showing happiness.

Light

This portrait photographer used a technique of split lighting to beautifully cast a shadow on the left side of her face to where it is not visible. This lighting technique helps make the image extremely dramatic and interesting. I will probably use this lighting technique for one of my in studio portraits. It is great for making the photo dramatic

This type of lighting technique is called broad lighting. The models face is turned slightly and the light is brighter and stronger on one side of the face than the other. It is similar to split lighting, but the face is still visible and lit. This is great for most face portrait photography. I really like this because it can help show certain emotion by casting the brighter light on one side more, so that the whole image is unique and put together.

This photo has good lighting because the spotlight effect creates a center of attention feeling.

studio lighting

The lighting in the picture on the left is probably lit from the right because of the shadow it creates. I think that creating a shadow adds a more dramatic feel that makes one assume that there is a bigger story than what is portrayed in the picture. The photo on the right is lit by an overhead light. This causes the picture to have a more hopeful feeling, especially with the black background. The light is more evenly spread across the person or figure.

I plan on using christmas light and more raw lighting to bring a sense of light and happiness to the dark, black background. My models will wear all white. Their outfits and the lighting will work together to create pictures that tell stories. The black background will represent the world or one's environment and the raw lighting and white dresses will represent how one reacts to their environment, even in rough or "dark" times.

light

Butterfly lighting is the classic beauty lighting technique. Great for high cheek bones and named for the butterfly pattern shadow that forms below the nose when it’s used, this will yield gorgeous “glamour” shots.  This photo by William Sawalich depicts the butterfly lighting extremely well. I enjoy this type of lighting because it is most used in close-up shots involving fashion.
Split lighting is moving the light over to one side, you’ll cast half of your subject’s face in shadow of varying intensity. This can range from complete darkness, to something much more subtle. This image is great at using the split lighting technique. It expresses great amounts of emotion by only showing one side of her face.

Portrait lighting

I really like the lighting in this image because of how much brighter her face is than the background. I also like that that background is very dark and the bright light adds nice contrast. The lighting in this conveys a feeling of happiness.

The lighting in this image is very successful in the sense that it creates a very sad and depressed feeling. The photo being monochromatic also adds to this feeling. I like how the person almost blends in with background, yet stands out enough to be able to see her.

Portrait lighting

I believe that the lighting in this picture is successful because it is very spotlighted on the girls face, making her face and especially eyes appear bright and stand out.

The lighting in this picture is very successful in highlighting the girls face and eyes with the monochromatic black background also working with the lighting to accent parts of the picture.

portrait lighting feelings ヽ༼ ಠ益ಠ ༽ノ

the lighting in this image of dave is very pleasant because of the way that there is a shadow on the right side of his face. this image conveys the emotion that you get when your dad decides to make you scrambled eggs for breakfast but ends up burning the whole house down and all that you have left from the house fire is your printer.

the lighting in this portrait of bella hadid portrays my constant feeling. this feeling is that emotion you get when you put off doing your study guide to an english test you have coming up until the last moment, and then when you finally decide to do it, you realize you brought home your biology composition book instead of your english composition book and all that you have left is your stupid, useless biology composition book. but you still look cute in the end. the lighting helps to better convey the monochromatic color and i also get a sleepy feeling when i see this image.

Portrait Lighting

For me, this image uses light to show the emotion of hope. As the light shines down upon his face, the subject is looking towards it with a trustful gaze and a slight smile, that makes me feel hopeful.
In this image, I feel that the photographer displays a feeling of sadness. The light looks like a sunset falling on the subject's blank face as she becomes consumed by the darkness. It gives me an opposite feeling than that of the first picture, one of sadness and loneliness.

For my project, I hope to capture the emotion of my subject by asking them to act how they feel in that moment.

Lighting and How it Applies to my Concept

The 1st picture is shot at an upward angle, this is effective for scary looking photos and any type of dark idea. The facial expression shows no emotion for a scary and eerie affect. This would apply to my photos because having a mental diseases can feel like your trapped inside your self and you head is controlling you, i think the way this is shot can really portray that feeling. Or, I could use this for the feeling of recovery and coming out of that dark place in your mind, but sometimes still slipping back in because the darkness is still inside you, you're just fighting to see the light.

The 2nd picture is really uncertain, and this may be used to show some artificialness. The lighting is clearly that lightbulb and that is artificial and so is the "helping hand" that probably isn't very helping because of the uncertain, and artificial vibe that it gives. I could apply this to my concept because sometimes when you take medicine for a disorder you can get hooked on it if you increase your dosage. Once you go back to your normal dosage it does'nt work as well, so this is kinda like medicine that may say "take me to feel better" but its only immediate and not long term so in the end its a choice you have to make if your going to take that pill or not.
