I think this image is very strong because of the exposure that he chose to shoot this in. The way the hair looks black and the shadows are accentuated show sadness. I think the colors convey a sad mood, that could make you feel bad. The grass is dying and the girl looks like she is dying too. There is a large aperture and there is a lot of light coming in. I would maybe turn the girl so you could see her facial expression so it could convey the feeling better.
